Science Urban myths

The actual science is:

Polar Bear fur is not a fiber optic.

Glass is not a liquid. Some ancient windows are thicker at the top and sides.

Airplane wing lift can be completely explained in terms of Bernoulli's equations of conservation of energy, that is that when air speeds up its pressure decreases, or in terms of Newtons' equation of the change in momentum of the air, that is that then the wing deflects air downward the reaction force on the wing produces an upward force. However it is nearly impossible to calculate the lift produced by a wing from these equations instead aerodynamicists use the circulation of air about the wing to calculate lift.

The conducting metal shell of a car protects passengers from lightning, the tires do not protect passengers from lightning. The lightning has just jumped 3000 feet from the cloud to the ground the remaining 6 inches from the car to the ground will not stop it.

Recent discovery

In a sample of 256 men there were found to be 80 different versions of the chemical that converts red light into electrical impulses, rhodpsin.

Rhodopsin molecules are made from retinine molecules bound to opsin molecules. The opsin molecules tune the retinine molecules so that electrons resonate with different frequencies of light. When the red rhodopsin interacts with red light an electron moves from one bond to another causing the molecule to bend, This opens a channel which allows charged ions to flow through a cell membrane which triggers the cone cell to "fire" i.e. create a -0.1 volt electrical pulse.

Creating your own Gray step images.

Mark used photoshop to make a gray step that may be printed out on your own printer.

Print it, cut it out and place it on dark gray or balck poster paper.

Pick the size most useful to you.
