Submitting
Digital Originals to the EDAM Project
Creating
digital originals
The EDAM project is interested in digital assets that are copyright
Exploratorium and can be use in multiple ways, both in print or
on the web. We would like everyone who is creating new digital assets
to understand that they are more valuable to the museum if they
can be repurposed. If you are photographing non-staff, we would
like you to get a model release. The form is available from Megan
in Learning Tools. If you are working with volunteers to create
digital assets, we would like you to make sure you have an understanding
with them, in writing, that the assets they create belong to the
Exploratorium.
We would like you to create the digital images in the highest resolution
format that you can. Ideal is a TIFF format, 3072 x2048 pixels or
higher, suitable for printing. Less-than-ideal, but still ok, is
a high-resolution, maximum quality jpeg. All assets in the central
project database, Demo5, have both a high and a medium resolution
version. If you only have an original image file that is 760 x 512
or so pixel resolution (medium res), suitable for web use, we cannot
put it in Demo5, but if you have a lot of these, we can help you
create your own image management file to organize them.
Sending digital
originals to us
Just
send the high-res original to us; we will create the medium-res
copy.
Using the NT Network, log onto Cousteau and choose the FORARCHIVE
server. Put the digital originals into a new folder with the name
of your department or project or shoot.
Send an email to Rose letting her know you have new images for her
to catalog, Include the following information in the email:
a- the number of files and a general sense of content of each batch
(for example, 17 "duck-into kaleidoscope" files)
b-name of photographer
c-year of asset creation
d-what dept/project/person commissioned the shoot
e-named people if known or appropriate
f-where the model release form is if there is one
g-exhibit name if it isn't obvious
h-whether or not Rose needs to rush to catalog these into the system
i-anything else you think is important
