Subject: RE: Homeland Security Initiative
Last week's SLA.COMmunicate contained an item related to Homeland Security.
The Homeland Security bill before Congress has instigated much debate. I
wanted to clarify SLA's position. Given the diversity and reach of our
membership, SLA as an organization has not chosen to take a position on the
attributes or necessity of Homeland Security. Nor do we endorse the specific
terminology chosen by our country's elected officials. Headquarters staff
has been involved with the Board and leadership in this initiative to
maintain the proper perspective. At the request of members and leaders, we
have chosen to promote the value and the role that special librarians and
information professionals can and should play in government. And, sadly but
true, we do need to utilize high profile initiatives to obtain recognition
of our voice with legislators and other government officials.
