Subject: Farewll to Pubscience
cross-posted.
PubScience, a specialized web database of science-related content,
is no more. A message on the web site states, "PubSCIENCE has been
discontinued. Scientific and technical information is available at
www.osti.gov. Specific links are available for journal literature at
www.osti.gov/journal_sources.html."
Although talk of a possible closing of the resource has been since
August, the shutdown comes without any advanced warning. PubSCIENCE
was provided by the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Science and
Technical Information.

The Department of Energy decided to discontinue PubScience, in spite
of 230 comments supporting it versus 7 from publishers asking it be
taken down. These comments were generated by those responding to a
notice on the PubScience home page. DOE declined to put a notice in
the Federal Register asking for further comment when asked to do so
by ALA saying that they had already received enough comments. Please
write to your legislators in Congress to protest this action. This
is simply the prelude to future efforts to pressure government into
eliminating other free data bases. This could include National
Library of Medicine and other national library services. Bernadine
