I also think the SLA should take a stand or, at the very least, provide
some practical information to its members about the implications of the USA
PATRIOT Act for special libraries.

It's really disappointing to see the good job ALA and ARL are doing in
terms of making information available, while SLA does nothing (but the
association sure is making it easy to find information on the critical
"branding" issue!)

I've contacted Doug Newcomb of SLA's Public Policy office three times in
the past two months, asking that something about this legislation and its
implications be posted on SLA's web site. He replied to my first email by
saying that they were working on posting some information. He also asked
for a copy of a resource list I developed as part of an article in the
upcoming Bayline, and I forwarded it. He hasn't responded to my last two
messages and there's no information about the Patriot Act on the SLA site.

Perhaps some prodding by other concerned members would help - you can
contact Doug at doug@sla.org.
