Subject: Foothill College Library Tech program to close

As a part-time instructor in the Diablo Valley College library tech
program, I was saddened to hear about the latest cut that will
certainly affect all of us. These programs (including the one at
CCSF) turn out great library techs.

We can all help out though.

See below.

From my colleague, John Fogle, at Foothill, with his permission to post:

>Foothill College is terminating the 33-year-old Library Technology
>Program at the end of the spring, 2003 quarter. As many as 23
>first-year students are going to be stranded unless the
>administration gets the money to pay for the three second-year
>classes.
They are being referred to CCSF's and the Diablo Valley program, and
I have been making them aware of online programs such as Cuesta's,
but the death of the LT Program in Silicon Valley is a big hit for
current and potential students and the information community.

I have been fighting to get the Foothill administration to let us
seek grants to underwrite the program for a year or two while we
expanded it to reach underrepresented groups in the info/library
field (such as Latinos) and to port a much of the program online as
reasonable, but we can't do that, can't even get help from the
Foothill-De Anza Foundation, without the administration's approval.

>If you know people in the SLA who might be interested in writing to
>the Foothill College administration to say how important the program

>I hope your Diablo Valley program continues, as well as the CCSF

>some people of that fact.
