Greetings All -

San Andreas Chapter will start the Program year with a wonderful event at the new Martin Luther King Jr. Library in San Jose.

There will be an address from the top of administration of both the library school and the public library. (See more details below.) Also tours of the facility will be held with a brief address from the Outreach Librarian at the close of our meeting. Tasty morsels included.

We hope some of our San Francisco colleagues will be able to join us at this exciting event. Registration and other details found below!

On August 1st, the new Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library opened at its new location on 150 E. San Fernando St.

* 475,000 square feet, the largest library to be built at one time west of the Mississippi
* First library in the U.S. to be an innovative collaboration between a city and a major university
* Special collections include the Ira F. Brilliant Beethoven Center, California History Room, Martha Healey Cox Center for Steinbeck Studies, Cultural Heritage Center, the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Collection
* Dedicated areas for children's programs; teen center; computer instruction; educational resource center; Center for Literacy

"For the first time, Silicon Valley residents can utilize the same education center from earliest childhood through post-graduate studies, creating a distinct path for young learners to follow to higher education. Community members will enjoy access to the comprehensive collection of university resources, ultimately helping them achieve both career and personal growth goals. For university students, the combined resources of the city and university library system will be available to them online through the city's branch library system."

We will begin the evening with a brief presentation and welcome from Jane Light, Director San José Public Library and Jo Bell Whitlatch, Associate Dean, San José State University Library. They will share some of their experiences with this new and exciting collaborative endeavor.

                * Registration begins at 5:45 pm in Suite B.
                * Welcome address at 6:15
                * Tours of 12-15 people will begin at 6:45 and continue throughout the evening
                * Appetizers will be available during the event.
                * The evening concludes at 8:30 pm.
