Thanks, good discussion!

We've also done some very similar kinds of brown bag lunches - following
is some text from a really old handout I had on hand (that needs
updating) ....we had some examples with a live internet connections and
stressed the critical evaluation of resources. I tried to make it
interactive, and let them talk about their favorite resources and
tricks. I've found our groups can pretend to be shy, so on several
occasions I have created a game where participants can draw questions
out of a hat and read them aloud. I know, it sounds goofy, but it gets
them talking -

Search Strategy BluePrint for 2002

Search String Strategy
1) Write out your question
2) Think of alternative search terms, phrases, and variations
3) Identify resources you'd like to use (books, articles, news,
internet, people)
4) Set a time limit for yourself

Search Engine Strategy
To cover about half the web, try several search engines:
1) www.google.com
2) www.altavista.com
3) www.northernlight.com

If you have more time,
4) Try a directory www.yahoo.com
5) Add a metasearch engine like www.ixquick.com
6) Add another large collection www.alltheweb.com

Invisible Web Tricks
1) Try to find a basic guide on your topic at www.about.com
2) Include broad terms in your search like crawler, directory,
database, or web ring.
3) Expand your search to include industry associations, portals or
library collections
4) Build your bookmarks, share them with your colleagues, and read
