That was how I read it also, Chris. It doesn't bother me (other than the fact that SLA uses my company's competitor to distribute their news releases....)

I don't know where the impetus came from but it might have something to do with the # of news organizations headquartered in NYC. And, of course, the prestige of NYPL.

It reads to me that they're making the offer to media, not the RNC. On the face of it, I think providing the best research from professionals is a responsible, non-partisan, democratic act.

Not to mention that many news orgs, back at their home bases, have libraries and many news librarians belong to SLA.

Subject: SLA-SF: SLA / NYPL Offers Research Support to RNC?

I am writing to protest the offer of SLA services to the Republican National Convention as stated in the Press Release posted on the Yahoo website as follows. I could not find anything on the SLA website regarding this press release so if this is not true, then Yahoo.com has some explaining to do. However, if this release is true then I write to request that SLA cease this activity immediately. My comments follow. From Yahoo:

NEW YORK, Aug. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- The Special Libraries Association (SLA) and the New York Public Library (NYPL) are offering Information Central for complimmentary research services to the media gathered for the 2004 Republican National Convention. Staff from NYPL and local members of SLA will provide research support during the convention. Queries may be submitted via phone, electronic mail, or in person at the concierge service desk in the James A. Farley Post Office, located on 8th Avenue, between 32nd and 33rd Streets in Manhattan. Access to the Farley Post Office and the complimentary research services are available to registered media during the convention.
Initial queries must be submitted in person at the concierge service desk, so that appropriate credential checks may be completed. Subsequent queries may be submitted via phone or electronic mail. Details on making electronic requests will be provided to registered media representatives during their initial visit to the concierge service desk.
John Ganly of the New York Public Library says the system is easy to use. "Once a media representative submits a request to the concierge service desk, it will be transmitted to the NYPL Science, Industry and Business Library staff. Results of the research will then be reported back to the person making the request in an appropriate format."
The complimentary search services are being graciously supported by Factiva, Information USA, LexisNexis, and OneSource.

+++End Yahoo Press Release+++ I object to SLA using my membership in SLA to provide special, privileged informational assistance for a national convention. I think this implies SLA's support for the candidates of that party. I do no want SLA resources (through my fees to you) to aid any candidate for office. We are a non-profit organization and I am reasonably sure that lending support for a particular political party is wrong, if not illegal. It is certainly inflammatory. We are not a 527 are we? If SLA gave this assistance to the DNC in July, it should not have done so. If SLA did give this support to the DNC, I did not read about it. I would have written then had I known. If SLA is offering assistance to the RNC I ask that you desist immediately. I think it is incumbant upon our organization to be free from political ties. Are we offering the same support to the Libertarian Party or the American Nazi Party? What the NYPL does is it's problem but this is my organization and I ask that you stop this use
of my SLA resources immediately. Thank you.Dunn Miller, MLISSLA-SF
