As an out-of-state vendor rep, I'm usually just a lurker
on this list :), but I thought y'all might like to know
about some of the local efforts to support the 100,000+
(and growing!) evacuees here in Houston.
Wal-Mart, Target, and other companies are helping to
turn the Astrodome into a well-stocked shelter for up
to 60,000 people, as many as half of them children.
Local museums, entertainment venues, arts organizations
and sports clubs are offering free or reduced-cost
admission to people from Louisiana, Mississippi and
Alabama. Restaurants are giving out free meals.
One Academy Outdoors Store donated all of its cots,
sleeping bags and cookware to a fire station housing
over 90 people.
Our public and private universities are offering
automatic admission to affected college students, and
will hire as many of the faculty and staff as they can.
Our public and private grade schools have opened their
doors, as well, since many schools will likely not
re-open until December at the earliest.
The entire city has mobilized to provide whatever aid
we can to those who have lost everything but their
lives and the clothes on their back. We know full well
that it could have just as easily been Houston that got
hit. Next time, we might not be so lucky.
But I wouldn't trade it for life in Earthquake Country :)
