As you might know, Oakland Public Library is hosting a program called
One City, One Book...and the current book is
Mistress of Spices (wonderful read, if you haven't). The idea is that
"everyone" in the city read the same book and the Library is
Hosting numerous related programs.

On Monday, Feb 13, there will be concert at Yoshi's
"George Brooks presents: New Works for the Indian Jazz Ensemble"
inspired by Mistress of Spices.
It sound like an interesting evening.

inspired by "The Mistress of Spices"

Saxophonist, composer George Brooks is the leader of Summit the popular
world fusion super-group. On February 13th he brings this very special
group to Yoshi's for one night only. This event will be a fund-raiser
for the Oakland Public Library co-ordinated with the Library's"One City
One Book" campaign.

George will present new works for this Indian Jazz ensemble inspired by
The Mistress of Spices, a novel of magic realism set in Oakland. The
concert will feature Aashish Khan on Sarode. Aashish is the eldest son
of the legendary Ali Akbar Khan and one of the pioneers of World fusion
music. He has performed with George Harrison, Eric Clapton, Alice
Coltrane and Ravi Shankar. Aashish is also featured on George Brooks'
2000 Moment Records release, Nightspinner.
