San Jose Mercury News provides a separate weekend entertainment section
on Thursdays entitled "eye".

The Contra Costa Times has recently begun a similar Thursday feature
explaining that they felt the readers wanted to know about weekend
activity
offerings earlier than Friday. They've been doing it now for a couple
of
weeks in a similar tabloid sized section. This must be a common
phenomenon.
Friday is devoted to movies and is a regular sized section. Rather than
saying they are targeting a different demographic, perhaps the Chronicle
should follow the CC Times lead and promote the early weekend planning
feature.

Tee hee....

To me, it looked like "Pink Meets_____" where the blank is the Bay
Guardian, or the East Bay Express, or any other of the free weeklies
that run all across the country. Nothing extra special.

Re: 96 Hours
I don't know what I was expecting but when I saw it was a recycled,
oops, sorry...re-purposed Pink Section, I was a little disappointed.
The
younger audience target (the 25-35 age range?) was obvious but there
was
enough in it to hold my interest. I'm curious to see the forthcoming
issues.

Some comments:

- We subscribe to three papers too! But it is not unusual for my wife

and I to be sitting in bed or in our favorite chairs in the living
room

with laptops, talking about what we are browsing.

- On the financial question: The website is growing at around 30% a
year

but its gross revenues are quite small compared to the newspaper,
which

is not growing in revenue. The gap between them will not close for a

number of years, so lean times in the coming years.

- Believe me when I say we've tried many, many things over the years
to

increase circulation of the newspaper, but nothing has worked for us
or

pretty much any other newspaper. Speaking of new things: did you see
the

new Thursday entertainment tab we started today? It's mainly aimed at
a

younger audience than our core subscriber base.
