I can't speak to the Chronicle's section but the Contra Costa Times merely
replaced their regular Thursday "Style" section with this. The earlier
section was devoted primarily to health related issues and was sometimes
interesting and informative though it was, for the most part, advertising
for non-surgical cosmetic enhancement, weight reduction remedies and
centers, and senior living facilities. The rest of the news is still very
well covered.

The Mercury News has just started a similar section.
What junk! And how much easier this must be to put together than sending
real reporters out to write real articles. Covering the news, doing
research and analysis and writing good stories is hard work and can produce
valuable, important information. These entertainment listings are
intellectually worthless. If they were in addition to what the newspaper
had been doing they wouldn't be bad, but they divert precious resources
from actually covering the news. And as Sandy noted, we have an abundance
of alternative newspapers and other sources providing similar coverage and
this simply duplicates that.
I will certainly miss the local coverage that the Chronicle has dropped
while I'll gain nothing from this new section. I'd like to be an informed
citizen and know what mischief our local politicians are up to; I don't
need help planning my weekends.
I hope this change does gain the newspaper more readers because I like
having a daily paper, but I'll be shocked if that happens.
