Although it can be a little tricky, building a motor seems to be a fairly 
popular science project and there are a number of web sites which give 
information on it.  For example, I think you will find more than one motor 
design at http://atschool.eduweb.co.uk/trinity/elec1.html and 
http://www.scitoys.com/scitoys/scitoys/electro/electro2.html and 
http://www.simplemotor.com/  If you do a search on the web, I'm sure you 
will find more.  You could also look at your local library for books that 
tell you how to build motors.
