Karin, my two cents:

Although it would be kinder and gentler to have a mail ballot, in many cases
the mail process is slower, always more costly (ex-Treasurer's hat here) and
I'm not convinced that the outcome would be any different in the great
majority of cases.

That's why the SLA Board recommended that the new bylaws provide for most
voting to be done at the business meeting. The membership overwhelmingly
approved the bylaws revision.

One of the touchstones of the whole process was to become a more agile
organization with the ability to change and adapt more quickly. Of course
everything has its pros and cons.

Best wishes,
Richard

Jaye LaPachet and Ava Goldman have just sent the two announcements to
the list regarding the vote on the SLA name change. There is a
disclaimer with respect to the second article from Information Today
regarding why the vote had to be held in person rather than
electronically. Does anyone know if New York State law would have
precluded a mailed ballot? After spending 3 years and goodness knows
how much money on the Task Force, you would think that a little more
spending in order to give more than 8% of the membership a chance to
express their opinion would have been more politically positive, not to
mention, generally "kinder and gentler."
