Subject: Intersect Alert, January 10, 2005

This issue of Intersect Alert strays a bit from its loose theme on
the intersection of libraries & government, and some are a bit dated
since I didn't get it out before the holidays, but I liked all the
stories and felt compelled.

We are looking at posting upcoming issues of Intersect Alert on the
SLA-SF web page. I'll let you know when this happens. m

Search for gay history to create 'virtual museum'
Curators, librarians and archivists across Britain are being asked to
scour their collections in search of documents and items relating to
the lives of gay people, with a view to establishing a "virtual
museum" of lesbian and gay history.

Berkeley Streakers (warning nakedness)
As is tradition during finals week, a bunch of Berkeley students go
streaking through the library. No one but the organizers know
beforehand when and where the run will take place, but those in the
right place at the right time get to witness a time-honored Berkeley
tradition.

Job Shadowing Program
The annual Job Shadowing Program takes FIS students at the University
of Toronto into libraries, archives and information systems-related
workplaces for a half-day or a day to observe the life of an
information professional at work. Last year we had over 40 host
institutions offering more than 80 shadowing opportunities.

Medical Journal Articles Ghostwritten by Rx Companies (blog)
There was a terrific article by Anna Wilde Mathews in Monday's Wall
Street Journal about how an increasing number of medical journal
articles are ghostwritten by drug company PR flacks.

Juliette Hampton Morgan Public Library
Library cards were returned and a cross was burned in Juliette
Hampton Morgan's yard in the 1950s for her unpopular stance in favor
of desegregating public libraries.

University of Washington: Grafitti Database
The Urban Archives project contributes to the body of knowledge on
urban communication. Since 2004, University of Washington students
have been documenting Seattle's streets and conducting original
research using a variety of approaches and perspectives. Using
photography, students carry out field research by capturing urban
texts such as graffiti, public art, advertising, signage, and
architectural design.

Chiras textbook decision
Chiras claimed the board rejected the book in 2001 solely because of
testimony before the board by conservative groups that labeled it
anti-Christian and anti-free enterprise.

Excerpts from federal ruling in "intelligent design" case
"We find that the secular purposes claimed by the Board amount to a
pretext for the Board's real purpose, which was to promote religion
in the public school classroom, in violation of the Establishment
Clause."

Data Mining 101: Finding Subversives with Amazon Wishlists
This is what's possible with publicly available information, but
imagine if one had access to Amazon's entire database - which still
contains every sale dating back to 1999 by the way. Under Section 251
of the Patriot Act, the FBI can require Amazon to turn over its
records, without probable cause, for an "authorized investigation . .
. to protect against international terrorism or clandestine
intelligence activities." Amazon is forbidden to disclose that they
have turned over any records, so that you would never know that the
government is keeping records of your book purchases. And obviously
it is quite simple to crossreference this info with data available in
other databases.
